The Iowa Air National Guard appointed the first female general in its history October 14 with the promotion of Brig. Gen. Jennifer L. Walter of Indianola, Iowa. Walter is an Upper Iowa University alumna, ’89.

Among her previous assignments, Walter deployed to Ahmed Al Jaber Air Base, Kuwait, and to Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, where she served as the 755th Air Expeditionary Group commander.

Walter is a native of Springfield, Mo., and 1974 graduate of North High School in Sioux City, Iowa.

She has served as the 132nd Fighter Wing’s vice commander since January 2011, providing command and control for more than 970 airmen and 21 F-16 fighter jets. Walter will become the Iowa Air Guard’s chief of staff.
