Did I say 1,400 feet? I was wrong; the “Linda Ojos Finca” (http://www.finca-lindos-ojos.com/Start-E.html) is 1400 meters high which is over 4,200 feet. Still part of Estili, a very rocky road takes you to this paradise in the Nicaragua National Forest. The pictures I uploaded can only capture a bit of the glorious scenery and ambience we experienced. What makes this such a delight is the very conscious sustainability efforts. Solar panels create electricity for the entire farm. Food is all organic including fresh milk from their cow.
On Wednesday we will be offering a workshops to teachers on “Understanding Children’s Behavioral Problems.” This should prove to be a very interesting week.

Greetings Steve and Carola — glad to see you made it, both exhausted and enthused. The beautiful land and the trek seem to have gotten you ready for your explorations of all types. I am very, very curious about many things. As you walk around the places and talk to people: what are the youth doing? how are they perceived? how are they critical and not critical to the overall health of the place? Look forward to reading your reflections.
Thanks for your note and questions. Most of the information that I am receiving is from Katrin Pfortner who is just beginning to organize community mental health programs for a very disenfranchised youth. The suicide rate has increased at an alarming rate, but it is difficult to get numbers. The community of Esteli which will probably be my base, has gone through so much with the civil war and Hurricane Mitch. There are few people who did not lose someone in these natural made and human made disasters. The Sandinistas’ return to power has made health care and education available to all. Unfortunately, the financial resources are very limited.
Katrin and her family live in a rather poor to middle class working class “barrio.” What I sense is a very strong sense of community. Since the dwellings are limited, everyone’s “living room” is outside where people are singing, playing until fairly late at night.
I will learn more tomorrow where Carola and I will be presenting a workshop on understanding and managing behavioral problems of children. The audience will be educators and consultants for the organization that is providing so much help to the communities.
